Huma Bhabha (b. Karachi, Pakistan, 1962)

4 WORKS ON PAPER: INK, PASTEL, AND COLLAGE
EACH: 30¼ X 22½ INCHES
COURTESY OF THE NANCY A. NASHER AND DAVID J. HAEMISEGGER COLLECTION

These drawings demonstrate the artist’s wide array of influences—ancient sculpture, African masks, Fauvism, Expressionism, and the work of Pablo Picasso and Basquiat, to name a few. In many ways, these works are a form of traditional portrait—the subject is framed from the shoulders up, facing the viewer head on. The artist abstracts her subjects, layering their visages with pastels and ink washes—even incorporating collaged photography taken by Bhabha herself.
