Known for her monumental public works and site-specific land art, Beverly Pepper challenged traditional gender roles through her artistic practice. Mastering welding by the mid-1960s, Pepper defied the perception of large-scale sculpture as predominately masculine and pushed the usual boundaries of metalwork.

Black Angel exemplifies Pepperโ€™s experimentation with metal, along with her skill in transforming the medium. The sculpture is comprised of reflective stainless-steel forms; the stacked open-square shapes are posed both playfully and seemingly precariously, rebelling against the usual grounded weightiness of metal sculpture.
