A Feast for the Eyes: The Art at JOEY Dallas
image

On any given visit to NorthPark Center since its inception, shoppers have encountered important works of art dotted throughout the courts and corridors. There are nearly 50 works from the Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Collection on view with additional works on loan from the Nasher Sculpture Center, making NorthPark a unique destination for museum-quality art that is accessible to all.

Over the years, stores and restaurants have taken inspiration from NorthPark's intrinsic dedication to the arts by thoughtfully incorporating works into their own spaces.

Louis Vuitton’s vast 10,300-square-foot space features an impressive art collection that includes works by Todd Eberle and James Turrell. Two sculptures owned by Neiman Marcus are installed within the landscape of the garden outside its doors—NIKH #9270 by Costas Coulentianos and Torso by Sergio Storel.

Every Eataly location across the world has its own theme, so it was only fitting that Eataly Dallas be dedicated to the Patronage of the Arts when it opened in 2020. Floating high over Caffè Lavazza’s seating area is a commissioned work titled Due Ellissi Garden Floral & Formation Sound & Color by Dallas-born artist Nathan Carter.

JOEY Dallas, a lively restaurant with a globally inspired menu, is the latest addition to embrace the artistic tradition of the Center.

“Artwork has become a larger part of our design approach over the last few restaurant locations,” said the JOEY team. “We’ve found it’s a special way to embody the JOEY brand while showing inspiration in our space from the locale.”

When considering artwork for their first location in North Texas, the team “wanted to play with the fine line between showcasing this idea of a modern cowboy in a contemporary way, while preserving the overall feeling of southern elegance in the design of the space.”

To curate the collection, the JOEY team enlisted a mix of galleries that they have previously worked with as well as some based in Texas, including the Commerce Gallery in Lockhart and Davis Gallery and Framing in Austin. The result is 11 works that provide moments of interest through color, character, or content throughout the restaurant.

Two Texas artists have pride of place in the main dining room. B Shawn Cox is a mixed media artist living and working in Austin. Born in Lubbock, with ranching roots in the sand dunes of the Monahans, his work is vibrant, graphic, and playful. Although he escaped the small-town ranching life to explore big city professional dreams, his western foundation remains a stronghold in his work.

Melinda Buie was born and raised in East Texas. She is a 1999 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and now lives and works in New York. Her piece, Indie, Jesse, Leroy, Henry & Tex, is a large-scale oil painting of cows from her family's farm in East Texas

The space also features works by Whitney Avra, America Martin, Serge Nehaev, Tom Ngo, and Anja Van Herle.
